PARENTAL ALIENATION AWARENESS DAY 2024

Parental alienation can have significant impacts on a child’s behaviour and well-being, both in the short-term and long-term. Here’s how parental alienation can manifest in a child’s behaviour and it’s potential long-term effects, along with early signs of Parental Alienation.

Short-Term Impacts on Child Behaviour

Withdrawal and Avoidance: Children may exhibit withdrawal or avoidance behaviors, such as avoiding interactions with the alienated parent or expressing reluctance to spend time with them.

Anger and Hostility: Children may display anger and hostility towards the alienated parent, expressing negative emotions and making disparaging remarks about them.

Confusion and Ambivalence: Children may feel confused and conflicted about their feelings towards the alienated parent, experiencing a sense of loyalty bind or emotional turmoil.

Regression: Children may regress in their development, exhibiting behaviours that are typical of younger children or displaying increased dependency on the favoured parent.

Anxiety and Depression: Children may experience heightened levels of anxiety or depression, stemming from feelings of insecurity, guilt, or abandonment associated with the alienation process.

Long-Term Impacts On Child’s Behaviour

Difficulty Establishing Trust: Children may struggle to establish trusting relationships with others, including peers and authority figures, due to unresolved feelings of betrayal or mistrust stemming from the alienation experience.

Low Self-esteem and Self-Identity Issues: Children may develop low self-esteem and struggle with issues related to self-identity, as they may internalize negative messages and beliefs about themselves and their relationships.

Interpersonal Difficulties: Children may experience difficulties in forming and maintaining healthy relationships, including romantic partnerships and friendships, due to challenges in trusting and connecting with others.

Emotional Regulation Challenges: Children may have difficulties regulating their emotions, experiencing heightened levels of stress, anxiety, or anger in response to triggers related to the alienated experience.

Parental Alienation Syndrome: In severe cases, children may develop Parental Alienation Syndrome, a condition characterized by persistent rejection of one parent and alignment with the other parent, often accompanied by unfounded beliefs and accusations against the rejected parent.

Early Sings of Parental Alienation

Negative Comments of Belittling: One parent consistently makes negative comments or belittles the other parent in the presence of the child.

Interference with contact: One parent interferes with the child’s contact or family time with the other parent, making it difficult to spend time with the other parent.

Disparaging Remarks by The Child: The child makes disparaging remarks or expresses negative feelings towards one parent without valid reasons or explanations.

Lack of flexibility or Cooperation: One parent demonstrates a lack of flexibility or cooperation in co-parenting efforts, refusing to communicate or collaborate with the other parent on matters related to the child’s welfare.

Early recognition of these signs can prompt intervention and support to address parental alienation and mitigate its long-term effects on the child’s behaviour and well-being. It’s essential for parents, caregivers, and professionals involved in the child’s life to remain vigilant and responsive to the signs of parental alienation, seeking appropriate resources and support to promote healthy parent-child relationships and prevent further harm to the child.
